The heroes find themselves surrounded by chaos and pandemonium after their battle, and hear louder goblin chanting as more enemies appear around a nearby tent. Callen sings a song of courage to aid his companions, and Talathel summons a small bear to help against one of the goblins. Elsbeth attempts another shot, which also misses wildly, before switching to her trusty rapier. Talathel runs to the goblin nearest the burning tent and attempts to fling it into the fire. Another goblin runs at Elsbeth, but misses and slides past in a trail of dust. Shortly after Elsbeth starts laughing madly, so hard that she falls prone beside the goblin attacker. Avornor the owl comes to her aid and attacks the fallen goblin before it can stand. As it stands it tries to swing at Elsbeth, misses, and hacks off its own leg. It falls beside her once more, dead, and this snaps Elsbeth out of her giggles and she rises to fight once more. Callen is tripped by the female goblin, and Tal is still trying to throw his goblin in the fire, as it is hanging on by its hands and teeth. As Elsbeth tries to go help Tal, she is flanked by two more enemies. Finally succeeding in burning his goblin to death, Tal goes to help the trapped rogue, and together they take out the remaining enemies.
Father Zantus runs up and thanks the heroes. He notices their injuries and heals all of them as thanks. Looking around, the group notices many dead villagers and goblins, and hears screams and snarls from the northern side of the village. They take off towards the noise, and find a man hiding behind a rain barrel and a goblin commander on a wardog, killing another hound that was trying to protect the man. More goblins run out and surround the fighters. Elsbeth runs north to attack two of the goblins, while her companions decide to surround one enemy to the south. While they all take turns tickling the solo goblin, Elsbeth manages to take out both to the north and runs after the wardog rider. After Leon manages to punch out the southern goblin, the others rush to her aid, just in time to see her fall unconscious before the commander.
When the group wakes up night has fallen and they have been carried to a makeshift hospital. A gentleman in a dark cloak is talking to Father Zantus, and he comes over to talk to the group once he sees they are awake. He apologizes for not arriving at the battle in time to help us, and offers to continue to fight with us, as our group were the only ones brave enough to stand and fight when the goblins attacked. Eldern Foxglove, the man who had been hiding be the rain barrel, comes over to thank the group for saving him, and tells us to visit him at the Rusty Dragon if we need a place to stay.
Around 2am the band of heroes feels strong enough to walk, and they make their way to the Rusty Dragon Inn. The innkeep lets them in after recognizing they are the band of fighters who defended the town, and he promises food and drink before giving us each rooms to stay in. After sitting down to bowls of stew, the adventurers learn that goblins do not usually attack the town, and Roland mentions he had come to town looking for a bard. After a long day the group each adjourn to their rooms and rest up.
The next morning the group awaken to the usual hustle and bustle of a town going about its daily routine. As they go downstairs everyone gathered in the main room cheers and greets them as the heroes who saved the town. After a breakfast of hearty stew, they leave the inn but continue to be greeted as saviors. The heroes travel to the temple and find Zantus and Sheriff Hemlock talking to each other. Hemlock asks the group for help, as a vault has seemingly been broken into and the door is hanging off its hinges. Agreeing to the task, the adventurers travel with him to the scene of the crime, where Hemlock asks Father Zantus to wait in the cathedral.
Elbeth can see footprints around the vault, mostly goblin-sized but with one human-sized print among them. Tal determines the goblin prints belong to about 6 individuals, and he tracks the seven sets of prints over the wall around the vault. We hear rustling behind us and turn to see Roland, who had followed us from the inn. Tal questions his motives, and Roland states he is from Nex, and that where he is from one must rely on the steel of their weapons and not magic. While he is talking Elsbeth checks for traps, but finds none. She stealthily sneaks towards the door, and as she goes to open it two hands appear and throw the door wide, revealing two skeletons. One rakes Elsbeth’s face as she jumps away, and the others take up fighting positions. Roland shoots at one of the skeletons, and its head explodes on impact. Leon hits the other, shattering its ribs and causing the rest of the body to collapse back into a pile of bones.
Looking around the room they can see a robe in the back right corner, and a sarcophagus that is lying open. The name engraved on the sarcophagus is “Father Toban,” and Sheriff Hemlock approaches to ask that the news of body-snatching be kept on the down-low. Toban was the priest that burned to death in the Late Unpleasantness, and it was rumored at the time that his daughter had set the fire that burned down the temple. The group agree to Hemlock’s request, and turn their attention back to the surroundings…
